Machinery and Techniques for Pig Husbandry
Abstract:
Pig farming in Germany is developing towards more animal welfare. A number of label programs and legislative changes pose numerous challenges for pig farming and science. Therefore, the improvement of animal welfare in pig husbandry is one aim of a large number of research projects in recent years. In 2020, the ban of keeping sows individually in crates was an important issue. Various new housing systems were tested in the service center as well as in the farrowing house, whereby the complete waiver of fixation of the sows was problematic. However, through a short-term fixation and the adaptation of the housing environment, functionally reliable housing systems for sows can be created.
