Pressure to act on ammonia reduction and mitigation options in cattle farming
Abstract:
Pig farming in Germany is under considerable pressure to adapt with regard to the development and practical implementation of more animal-friendly and low-emission husbandry methods. New housing systems should allow the animals more contact with the outdoor climate and more species-appropriate behavior through larger structured areas. In addition to the current development of pig farming, the article describes the new legal framework conditions as well as various possibilities for reducing emissions. The evaluation of current research work shows that a conclusive assessment of the environmental impact of the new housing systems is not yet possible and that this should be made possible through a research network that has already been initiated.
